About
A Sanctuary Built on Love and Second Chances

Nakita’s Digs is a heartwarming dog sanctuary and rescue in eastern Ontario, driven by a commitment to rehabilitate and care for animals who have experienced neglect and abuse. The sanctuary is home to animals, most of which are dogs, with unique stories—many rescued from dire situations and given the chance to heal and thrive in a safe and loving environment. Each dog’s journey is different.

The Beginning: Nakita’s Story

The story began with Nakita, a special dog who came into my life as a foster through the SPCA in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She had been severely abused and neglected, leaving her with deep emotional scars and significant behavioral challenges. Despite these hardships, Nakita’s spirit shone through, and I became deeply attached to her.

As her rehabilitation progressed slowly, the SPCA made the heartbreaking decision to deem her unadoptable due to her fear-induced aggression. They planned to end her life, but I couldn’t let that happen. I fought for her, and she became a permanent part of my life.
Over time, Nakita made incredible progress, overcoming many of her fears. Her journey and transformation sparked a deep interest in animal welfare. It also led me to study canine psychology and behavior, which helped me better understand how differently the canine brain is wired compared to humans—knowledge that helps me support and rehabilitate dogs in need.

A Passion for Nutrition and Health

For years, Nakita struggled with eating—a rare issue for dogs. Her lack of appetite was a constant worry for both my veterinarian and me. Determined to help her, I delved into studying canine nutrition and became a certified Canine Nutrition Specialist. I specialize in raw food and helping to balance and boost commercial diets. Through proper nutrition, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in the health and behavior of Nakita and other dogs at the sanctuary. Nakita, once uninterested in food, had come to leap with excitement at mealtime. She adored the meals I prepare and would eat more if I let her. This joyful change is the behavior most people associate with our canine companions at chow time. Seeing her transformation has solidified my belief in the power of proper nutrition and inspired me to help others understand its importance for their pets.

Nakita's story is the source of inspiration and motivation for the sanctuary’s mission.

Life at Nakita’s Digs

Every day at Nakita’s Digs is centered around the well-being of the animal residents. Each one has specific needs, and it is my priority to provide a safe, nurturing space where they can heal, grow, and prepare for the next chapter of their lives. Depending on their circumstances, dogs may:

-
Be rehabilitated, trained, and observed at the sanctuary.
-
Transition to a volunteer foster home.
-
Be placed with a loving forever family.
-
Remain at the sanctuary as a permanent resident if that’s in their best interest or if they have already been here for a lengthy stay.

Nakita’s Digs is a stress-free environment where animals receive the love, care, and attention they deserve. Whether they’re recovering or retiring, we ensure they feel at home.
