About

Nakita’s Digs is an animal sanctuary and rescue located in eastern Ontario. Most of the animals living here were rescued from bad situations or moments before. They all have a different story. It started with Nakita about 9 years ago when I was fostering her for the SPCA in Cape Breton, NS. She had been severely abused and neglected and was left with many issues to work through. Nakita’s rehabilitation progress was very slow and the SPCA eventually made the decision not to put her up for adoption and to end her life because of the signs of aggression she was showing when fearful. By then I was very attached and was not going to let that happen so they allowed for me to keep her. Nakita has since worked through many issues, and is still left with a few, but she is amazing, happy, healthy, and silly. She is my rock. Nakita has been and continues to be the motive for me to keep going and for my interest in animal welfare.

For years Nakita was not food motivated at all. Have you ever heard of a dog who doesn’t like chow time? There were times when she really worried both my vet and I, not knowing when she would eat next or if the vet would have to intervene. As I would do anything for this pooch, it motivated me to study and learn more about our canine friends and animal health so I have become a certified Canine Nutrition Specialist. I specialize with raw food and correct commercial diets. The members of the pack that live here have seen positive changes in their health and behavior through proper nutrition. Including Nakita who now jumps around with excitement when it is meal time.  She loves the food I prepare and would eat more if I let her. This is the K9 behavior most people know and expect.

My schedule revolves around the life in this place. Subject to their individual specific needs, I am dedicated to providing the animals here with a safe and nurturing home where they may be rehabilitated/trained/observed here or possibly with a volunteer foster before being placed with their forever family. Or this may become their permanent residence/place of retirement if this is in their best interest.

Nakita's Digs is a stress free environment for them to heal and grow, surrounded with all the love, care, and attention they deserve as they recover and transition into their forever home, or reside at the sanctuary and making it their home.

To continue to help our canine friends and other small animals Nakita's Digs Animal Sanctuary and Rescue relies on the help and support from the public through donations of money to help with veterinarian costs and supplies or by dropping off new or gently used items.
